Roof Replacement

Full Roof Replacement

The best way to ensure the maximum protection for your home’s roof is to go with a full roof replacement. When we do a full replacement, we ALWAYS tear off all old material to get down to the roof deck. This allows us to check all the things under the singles that only get to see the light of day every couple of decades and make any necessary repairs to ensure that we have the best foundation possible to install your new roof. This is the best practice, and the only way Honest Roofers will ever do a pitched roof. We do not go over old shingles because then we are putting brand new shingles over a worn-out roof and covering, rather than fixing any issues that may be hiding under the old roof. In addition, when you do a go-over on top of old shingles you are also doubling the weight your roof structure has to support and that can also potentially lead to major problems.

After we tear off all old material and get the deck (or foundation) of your roof repaired and prepped for the new roof the very first thing that is done is the installation of drip edge where applicable. This can be done in a few colors, but the majority of homeowners opt for white to blend in with their fascia. On some homes a colored drip edge adds to the curb appeal so it is an option we can discuss before roof install.

Next a peel and stick material called ‘Ice and Water Shield’ is installed on the lower edge of the roof for the first 3 feet up to protect against any wind driven rain that may blow under the leading edge of the shingles. This material has adhesive on one side and is adhered directly to the roof deck to prevent any water from ever getting behind it. On the remainder of the roof, we install a synthetic underlayment (NEVER tarred felt paper) that is waterproof, unlike felt, so that if something ever goes wrong and you lose shingles then the deck will still be protected from water until a repair can be made.

We then install the shingles. We can and have installed all brands of shingles, but we prefer Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles because they are quite simply the best non-Class IV* shingle on the market. They are partnered with 3M Scotchgard and are lifetime guaranteed they will never get the ugly black algae streaks that afflict ALL other roofs. They do not use crushed limestone as filler like some other shingles do to up their weight at a cheaper cost than asphalt. They are sealed better and more durable than the competition and are regularly rated as the best shingles by independent testing.

Also, during shingle install we will put on all new pipe flashings for your vent pipes, roof vents or ridge vent depending on your roof pitch, and address anything else such as chimney flashing, skylights, etc that may need to be addressed.

During your appointment to discuss and price out a full roof replacement Honest Roofers job is to educate homeowners to the best of our ability and allow them pressure-free time to make the decision that’s best for them and their home.

* Class IV refers to a hail-impact rated shingle that can return to original form without cracks or breaks in the asphalt when struck with up to 2” hail.
